This concert is part of Sangeet Millennium’s Songs of Benaras tour in remembrance of our GuruMa Padma Vibhushan Girija Devi on her 90th birthday.
Sangeet Millennium Ensemble will assemble a choice group of musicians to present an authentic two-part world music concert in a three-city tour along the Rio Grande river in northern New Mexico May 23-28, 2019. They will weave together classical South Asian vocal music, tabla, and sitar in the first half, followed by a blend of sitar, sax, and tabla for a fusion sound in the second half, featuring the Sangeet Millennium Ensemble with guest artists Rupan Samanta and Uddalak Samanta, on tour from India. The ensemble’s leader/project director, Dr. Amie Maciszewski, is a native New Mexican. Tickets are on sale now on Eventbrite; sponsorship options available.
The concert will consist of two parts:
Part 1. Songs of Benares, a performance of North Indian classical music showcasing the simultaneously earthy and spiritual style hailing from the ancient city of Benares, charmingly performed by acclaimed vocalist Rupan Samanta, on tour from India, with backup vocals and instrumental interpretations of the repertoire by Dr. Amie on sitar. Both artists are longtime disciples of the same legendary vocal guru and performer, the late Hindustani vocal diva Girija Devi of Benares. Uddalak Samanta will accompany on tabla.
